About Event

The fireside chat will discuss whether, when, and how the so-called actions of machines can and should result in legal liability and the problem of contextual bias in implementing medical AI in different communities. It will also examine the issues of AI, IP, equity, and the rule of law.

Who are the panelists?

Professor Sara Gerke is an Assistant Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law. Her current research focuses on the ethical and legal challenges of artificial intelligence and big data for health care and health law in the United States and Europe. Dr. Gerke has authored over 60 publications in health law and bioethics, especially AI and digital health. Her work has appeared in leading law, medical, scientific, and bioethics journals, such as JAMA, Science, and Nature Medicine.

Professor Daryl Lim is the H. Laddie Montague Jr. Chair in Law at Penn State Dickinson Law. He is also the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation and Founding Director of the Intellectual Property (IP) Law and Innovation Initiative.  He is also affiliated with the Institute of Computational and Data Sciences and the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence. He is an award-winning author, observer, and commentator on IP and competition policy trends and how they influence and are influenced by law, technology, economics, and politics.  

Dr. Anthony C. Ogden will serve as the moderator. He is the director of international and graduate education at Penn State Dickinson Law.  A respected scholar-practitioner with nearly 30 years of experience in international higher education, he has held senior international leadership positions at Pennsylvania State University, the University of Kentucky, Michigan State University and the University of Wyoming.  He has authored over 80 publications in the area of international higher education, with several books focused on international learning and engagement.
