Still | Moving: A Photography Exhibition by Joey Farrell
Still | Moving
Monika Olko Gallery, Sag Harbor
Please join Monika Olko Gallery for the opening of Still | Moving, a new photography exhibit by Joey Farrell, ecstatically shown in the artist's native home of the Hamptons.
This show marks Farrell's first solo exhibition since his breakout year in 2018, when he debuted Seventeen, which led to exhibiting at the AIPAID photography fair as the youngest artist in the history of the fair, as well as a write-up from Artsy naming Farrell as one of the 10 "must-see" artists in the show.
Farrell's earlier work was renowned for its innocent documentation of adolescence, featuring youthful scenes and figures. This new work is rooted in those same observational proclivities of a young kid, though more reflective, still, and measured.
Still | Moving gracefully reflects a dichotomy of stillness and motion, the paradox of which is perfectly coherent for Farrell, as he is known by those closest to him as someone who values perspective, peace, and presence.
These values come through in the new work. They're shown through the finding of peace and chaos amongst each other, whether in the roaring winter swells of Mecox Mist, or the quiet, considered images like Sticks or Hopper's FJ, which illicit questions of narrative and unseen movement.
