A Great Day At Inkwell: Sunrise Portrait
“A Great Day at Inkwell” sunrise portrait salutes Black excellence on Martha’s Vineyard
On Tuesday, August 12, Black-founded culture-shapers Actively Black and SPILL will convene Black founders, investors, artists, and visionaries on historic Inkwell Beach, Martha’s Vineyard for a sunrise portrait titled “A Great Day at Inkwell.”
Inspired by Art Kane’s legendary 1958 A Great Day in Harlem jazz photo, this gathering reframes that moment from a new and long-overlooked vantage point: the shoreline that once sheltered Black vacationers during segregation and now stands as a beacon of generational prosperity.
WHY IT MATTERS
First-ever large-scale portrait of Black ownership shot at Inkwell Beach, capturing the breadth of modern Black enterprise—from tech unicorns to HBCU student-preneurs.
Golden-hour dawn mirrors the original Harlem shoot and symbolizes the literal rise of a new era.Participants collectively represent more than $1.5 billion in enterprise value and include news-making names and dozens of first-time founders.
The first 50 attendees receive an exclusive Actively Black x SPILL “BLACK OWNED” crewneck or “INKWELL BEACH” tee and will share their ownership stories on SPILL using #GreatDayAtInkwell.
