About Event

Civic Tech DC is partnering with the DC Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) to host DC Open Data Showcase 2025, a celebration of Open Data DC and other public data about DC, and aligned with annual Open Data Week. On Wednesday, March 26th, we're inviting local data practitioners, data journalists, and university students to give 10-minute lightning talks on how they've used Open Data DC or other publicly available data about DC to solve city problems, tell compelling stories, or build tools.

Built Environment Indicators and Health Interactive Map Tool

The tool, originating as a DC government Hackathon project, sheds light on the relationship between the built environment and public health outcomes in the District of Columbia.

Mapping Multidimensionality: Using Census Data to Understand Neighborhood Communities

We explore how multidimensional measures of local communities, such as those provided by the Census Community Resilience Estimates (CREs), can be used to model dynamic changes in neighborhood communities through an intersectional lens, building on prior work inspired by research on the United States as a "Patchwork Nation."

Providing Greater Visibility on Automated Traffic Enforcement

We combine geospatial reference data from OpenDataDC with curated data from the ATE cameras and push the results out to OpenDataDC to inform the public about the current locations and enforcement statuses of all ATE cameras as well as provide comprehensive insights into the performance of the program through a variety of metrics.

Improving Homeless Shelter Capacity Management in Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C. has transformed homeless shelter bed management by using Survey123, Operations Dashboard, and the ArcGIS Python API to provide real-time data to our shelter transportation employees.

Data deep dive: traffic cameras

The District Department of Transportation recently doubled the number of automated traffic enforcement (ATE) cameras operating in the District. Many of these cameras issue tickets to people who are speeding. The District has published data on tickets issued by ATE cameras going back to at least 2010. This is a closer look at how the DC government uses automated traffic enforcement.
