Inspired by Pacita Abad’s bold vision, Pwrforward presents a panel of trailblazers showcasing creativity as a powerful tool for problem-solving. Just as Pacita Abad’s vibrant works tell stories that connect cultures and amplify marginalized voices, Filipino leaders in Canada today are channeling creativity to create meaningful change. Join us and discover how creative thinking transcends the arts, drives change and showcases the ingenuity of Filipino leadership.
5:15 PM - Networking continues
6:15 PM - Closing remarks immediately followed by a guided tour of the Pacita Abad Exhibit.
7:00 PM (optional & included with ticket purchase) - Live performance of Babaelan by Blessyl Buan, weaving contemporary dance and visual arts exploring the complexities of diasporic migration within Toronto's cultural tapestry.
***All Meryenda Mixer guests are welcome to continue exploring the gallery until closing at 9:00 pm.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT 🎨
Featuring more than 100 artworks by the late Philippine-born artist Pacita Abad (1946-2004), this critically acclaimed retrospective features large-scale textiles, works on paper, paintings and prints. She is best known for her bold large-scale hanging trapuntos, a form of quilted painting made of stitched and stuffed canvas.
Abad's artistic innovation and global recognition as an artist reflect the creativity and resilience that define Filipino leadership. Her ability to blend political engagement with artistic expression, while celebrating everyday labor show that: Filipinos are not only leaders within their communities but on the world stage.
