About Event

London is one of the world’s oldest capital cities, with its modern face layered on top of centuries of history. A vast metropolis, it is shaped by a web of institutions, authorities, and individuals who manage its functions on a daily basis. Many of its historic organisations pre-date the modern nation-state, existing today side-by-side with new innovations in how to organise local government. From the Mayor's and local councils, to established business interests and grassroots movements, the governance of London is continually contested.

Who really holds the power to shape the city's future? How do different layers of government, private interests, and communities interact to make decisions that affect millions? This event will explore the practical realities of governing London, uncovering the relationships, challenges, and opportunities that define its political landscape.

Join the Greater London Project for a conversation with Professor Tony Travers, Professor in Practice and Associate Dean of the LSE School of Public Policy. The discussion will be chaired by Joe Hill, founder of the Greater London Project.

The evening’s talk will cover how London actually works, who is in charge, and what that means for the city’s future.

Drinks will be provided.
