Street Naming in Honor of Johnny L. Tyus 'The Hat Man'
Please join us in honoring Johnny L. Tyus on October 30th from 4:30 - 5:30 PM (at the corner of 79th and Racine). The street will be named "Johnny L. Tyus - 'The Hat Man' Ave"—in recognition of his decades of hatmaking in Chicago.
Everyone is welcome. We cordially request that attendees wear their favorite hats.
Johnny was a master hatmaker on Chicago's South Side for over 50 years. As sole proprietor of Johnny's Hat Shop, he crafted hats for his beloved Chicago clientele and many notable clients including: the former Mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington, renowned musicians, Willie Dixon and Sammy Davis, Jr., and for films like The Blues Brothers, Coal Miner's Daughter and The Untouchables, which featured a custom hat designed by Johnny for Robert DeNiro in his iconic role of Al Capone. Johnny operated his business as a love letter to his family and his community. A true Chicago legend, he left an indelible mark on us all.
Parking is available.
