Heaven, Hell, and Mechanics: a chat about x-risk and wellbeing

• ​Long-term and short-term attention control, and a process for increasing agency.

• ​“Integration” in the sense of unifying the spiritual and material.

​ Hey, I’m Chris Scammell. I’ve been the COO of Conjecture-an AI safety startup-for the last three years. During this time, I’ve gone through the full arc of emotions about AI risk: fear, grief, zeal, loneliness, awe, dark humor, light humor, interconnectedness… I’ve learned a lot, both about how to regulate my own mental health and about how to use intense happenings like this as an opportunity to become more capable and happy. I’m popping out of the last three years feeling at my peak of wellbeing and ability. I trust that others who are struggling with emotions around x-risk will find their own path to wellbeing eventually, but I wish I had a map earlier in my process. I think I’ve got that map now - or at least the start of one - and am holding an event for anyone who would like to talk about this landscape. If there’s just a few of us, it’ll be a conversation. If there’s more of a group, I’ll run the event more as a talk with Q&A at the end. If there’s a lot of us, we’ll do a talk + breakout groups so there’s more room for you to discuss your own process.
