6:30-6.50pm - Na'im Merchant, Carbon Removal Canada

Na'im Merchant is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Carbon Removal Canada. He is passionate about the potential for carbon removal to meet climate goals while driving economic and social change. Na'im is also an advisor to Terraset and the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative, and was previously an Elemental Excelerator Policy Fellow. Carbon removal is an inevitable part of the world's climate change toolkit, and Canada is currently a leader in the sector. However, we need to set strong policy to make sure Canada continues to invest in innovation, and also to make sure that we deploy carbon removal responsibly.

6.50-7:15pm - James Henry, MyHEAT

James currently leads Growth & Sustainability at MyHEAT, a climate scale-up using heat loss mapping to promote energy efficiency. Previously, James was the Sustainability Lead for Google Canada, and supported Google's global Carbon team on Carbon Removal research. Most recently, James completed his Master's thesis on Circular Bioeconomy and Carbon Sequestration through biochar. For his presentation on carbon removal for Climate North, James will share his thoughts on big tech's role in the carbon removal space and its evolution, drawing lightly on the combined effect of federal policy and private sector goals, and will discuss durable carbon removal mechanisms such as biochar and seaweed.

7:15-7:35pm - Sahaj Shah & Nicole Wachtel, Taking Root

Nicole leads recruitment for Taking Root’s forest restoration projects, leveraging her project management experience with the Toronto Conservation Authority and City of Toronto. She holds a Bachelor’s in Urban Planning and a Master’s in Management. Sahaj leads user research and design for Taking Root’s digital platforms, focusing on inclusive and accessible support for reforestation efforts. She holds a BA in International Development from StFX and a Master’s in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS, University of London.
