With only a few years left to meet global conservation targets, urgent action is needed to ensure effective and equitable marine protection in the Mediterranean. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), particularly MPAs under strict protection, are one of the most effective tools to protect marine biodiversity and its ecosystem services. They are, however, often perceived as restricting human access and threatening coastal livelihoods, especially for fishing communities.
This event will challenge that perception by demonstrating how well-designed, inclusive MPAs bring real, socio-economic and environmental benefits to coastal communities and beyond. Co-organised by two key regional partnerships (Med Sea Alliance and Together for the Med), representing 70+ Mediterranean organisations from the grassroots to the institutional level, the event highlights how marine conservationists are addressing complex ecological and socio-economic challenges.
Through real-life examples from diverse Mediterranean countries, speakers will demonstrate how engaging local communities, advocating for stronger policy, and ensuring effective enforcement are critical to achieving meaningful marine protection for both nature and people.
