As we race to build artificial intelligence, are we losing touch with the natural intelligence of Earth?
AI is transforming our relationship with the planet — not only through its potential to improve some sustainability efforts, but also through its massive environmental footprint. The rapid development AI requires staggering amounts of water, energy, and rare earth minerals, raising urgent questions about what (and who) we are willing to sacrifice for technological advancement.
In the lead up to SF Climate Week, this conversation will explore the complex and often contradictory relationship between AI and planetary health. Join to discuss:
The ecological toll of AI — from resource extraction for hardware to the energy and water demands of training large models
The role of indigenous knowledge systems — how relational, land-based worldviews can challenge dominant extractive paradigms in AI development
AI as both a climate tool and threat — exploring its dual role in climate modeling and accelerating emissions
Earth as a living system — how natural intelligence might inspire more regenerative, interconnected approaches to technology
As AI accelerates, we face a reckoning: what kind of intelligence are we prioritizing, and at what cost? This salon invites you into an honest, grounded conversation about building with care, reciprocity, and long-term stewardship of our only home.
This is an in-person event. To facilitate smooth and cohesive conversations, please arrive at 5pm for a prompt discussion start at 5:30pm. Please note: Individuals who arrive after 5:30pm will not be able to get into the venue, and we request that you stay for the entirety of the conversation.
