ABOUT ALT AI
The Alt AI project seeks to unpack and nourish alternative narratives for AI outside Silicon Valley ideologies. Inspired by counter movements like slow fashion and slow food, it aims to “imagine and craft the worlds we cannot live without, just as we dismantle the ones you cannot live within” - Ruha Benjamin. Subverting corporate-first narratives, we invites critical AI researchers, designers, creative technologists, and artists to interrogate and publish critical AI discourse through collective thinking out loud sessions, webwoven research, and playful critiques creating one hot compost pile of antologies, miro boards and zines we hope spark new ways of thinking & talking about AI.

ABOUT THE SESSION
In this first community session of the project we will:
🍄 briefly introduce the project + research and share an open call for research leads
🍄 play with our new visual playground to visually critique existing or put forth new narratives of AI
🍄 seed a handful of potential themes we’re pondering (spoiler alert: we’re currently thinking about Slow AI, Girl AI, Esoteric AI, Small AI, and perhaps a few more we’re still excavating from the community garden) as we think out loud together - each sharing any references, associations, thoughts, ideas that come up around the themes
🍄 see and reflect on which theme(s) feel most fertile & meaningful for us to explore further in the research

ABOUT THE HOST
Nadia Piet (she/her) is an independent researcher, designer, and organizer with a focus on AI, technology, [digital] culture, and creativity. She is the founder & creative director of AIxDESIGN [a global community & decentralized studio nourishing alternative, participatory & feminist perspectives on AI], faculty at ELISAVA’s MA in Design for Responsible AI, and sifting through and sense-making of emerging tech impact via client projects & self-initiated work.
