About Event

Volunteering Untapped NYC is on a mission to build community through volunteering. We host events every month on the second Saturday and partner with local organizations around the city.

This month, we are partnering with Billion Oyster Project to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor. Because oysters are filter feeders, they serve as a natural water filter, in addition to a number of beneficial effects for the ecosystem.

The event take place on Governors Island, and to get there, we will take the 9:30 AM ferry to Governors Island from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South St, Slip 7) in lower Manhattan. The ferry is free on weekend mornings, and we will share more details after registration. Once we arrive on Governors Island, we’ll be helping Billion Oyster Project with a variety of tasks like shoveling and moving shells, and mixing cement, so be sure to wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty!

There will be an hour break for lunch (there are food trucks on the island, or feel free to bring your own food), and the event will wrap up around 2:30 PM. Afterwards, we’ll head to Taco Vista to hang out over drinks!

Please note, you will also need to sign a waiver and register with Billion Oyster Project through a link that our team will share once the volunteer list is confirmed.

Socials

Volunteering Untapped socials are an optional way to further socialize with other volunteers; we encourage everyone to come out to the social! Food and drinks will be available to purchase.
