Decoding Gut Stressors: Inflammation vs. Toxicity
As we start peeling back the layers of the inflammation to look for the root cause of disease, what we quickly realize is that it is multifactorial. Underlying reasons for progression of chronic disease could be because of gut based inflammation, toxins, oxidative stress, nutritional deficiencies or mental/emotional stress to name a few. If all could contribute, how do we know which area is most important for each patient? How do we guide our individualization of patient care? By looking at markers of gut based inflammation such as Zonulin, LPS, sIgA and at the same time that we capture levels of oxidative stress through 8-OHdG, F2-Isoprostane and intercellular levels of glutathione we capture a great overview of underlying issues that are driving that patient’s inflammation. These markers have association with cardiovascular disease as well as cancer, our two biggest killers. They also capture the concepts that functional medicine seeks to address which is determining levels of gut-based inflammation as well as toxic body burden. The Gut Ox Stress test from Precision Point Diagnostics captures key markers of root cause inflammation.
Learning Objectives:
What different markers of leaky gut indicate differentiating between what Zonulin, LPS and sIgA tell us.
Review research as it applies to oxidative stress and how it drives disease.
Review how markers of detox and gut health looked at in conjunction drive cornerstone treatments of integrative and functional medicine.
