Ethical AI in Health & Research: Global Insights, Local Opportunities
This cross-sector workshop convened by Research Australia will explore the ethical dimensions of AI in health and medical research, bringing global perspectives to local contexts. Participants will engage in a structured dialogue to examine challenges, share strategies and identify opportunities to shape responsible AI use across the health ecosystem. With representatives from government, research, regulation, consumer advocacy and industry, the session will foster a shared understanding of what ethical AI implementation looks like in practice, from discovery to delivery.
Adding a unique international perspective, the session will feature an in-person contribution from a leading AI ethics and health academic, Dr Jean-Enno Charton, affiliated with Merck Group in Germany, offering an EU lens on regulatory and ethical frameworks. Dr Charton will be joined by Professor Annette Schmiede, CEO of Digital Health CRC and Ms Kylie Sproston, CEO Bellberry on the panel. This global-local exchange, together with the linking of diverse voices and domains, supports the development of AI-enabled systems that are not only technically robust but socially legitimate. These systems advance community wellbeing, accountability and trust across Australia’s health and research sectors.
AI CoLab events are intentionally open and collaborative. We capture photos, audio, and AI-generated transcripts so we can remix key insights for the AI CoLab Alliance community. This is always done in line with the Charter’s values; transparent, ethical innovation and knowledge sharing to accelerate collective learning (see join.aicolab.org). By participating in an AI CoLab event, you agree to your contributions being captured and shared in accordance with this policy.
Research Australia thanks Merck Life Science for sponsoring Dr Jean-Enno Charton's attendance at this event and for providing a working lunch.
