About Event

Degrowth is a movement questioning the assumption that underlies a lot of the way our economy, and even our lives to many extents, are structured: the assumption that the economy, and money, can grow forever. And that even transitioning to a green economy, in the absence of significant cultural change and lowered consumption, isn't desirable or even possible from a resource standpoint.

Degrowth makes the case that the global economy may have actually already outgrown the planet in some ways and calls into question core parts of our economic culture, from things like GDP growth, to more personal things like endlessly growing retirement portfolios. Degrowth calls for an update to our mindsets - and looks at how our individual and collective wellbeing can improve in the process.

This cafe is an informal meet and greet for folks to hear about Degrowth and meet other folks who are interested in it, some who are thinking about how to host more conversations about Degrowth in their own little communities. There are four of us co-hosting, we'll give an intro to Degrowth and then each share why we are passionate about it and think it's important. We are starting a book club in May on the book Less Is More, by Jason Hickel, to talk more about and build some community around this in the DMV.

It should be a good, fun crew of people - if it's small enough, one of us will be hosting at our house in Takoma. If we end up getting a larger list, we will be booking a room at a restaurant.
