​Nippon Steel made headlines last month when then-President Joe Biden blocked its attempted $15 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel. Concerns about national security and supply chains were also expressed by President Donald Trump — who in December pledged to block the acquisition — along with politicians from both parties and U.S. steel manufacturer Cleveland-Cliffs. Notably, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States failed to reach a consensus on the deal’s security risks.

​Proponents of the acquisition argue that the move is in the best interest of protecting American jobs and point out that Cleveland-Cliffs’ opposition stems from their intention to acquire U.S. Steel, which would monopolize the domestic steel markets.

​Now, Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel have filed multiple lawsuits in response to the alleged wrongful interference with the acquisition.
