About Event

This workshop is intended for people who would like to establish 3D printers in their startup business. The course will cover advanced topics including:

  • 3D printer types and purchasing considerations

  • Initial setup, calibration and configuration

  • Printer repairs, maintenance and servicing.

  • Ordering and fitting replacement parts

  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for difficult printer repairs

  • Setting up a 3D printer 'farm' and control software options

  • Materials storage, dehumidification processes, profile generation, and fine tuning

Additionally, we will delve into the basics of 3D scanning and the workflows needed to duplicate and modify an existing part with a 3D printer using 3D scanning in Solidworks.

Cost: For non-Cicada residents, there is a non-refundable fee of $50 to cover the cost of materials, consumables and refreshments, payable once your registration has been accepted.

Course Facilitator: Neill Wainwright has been working with 3D printers since the very first DIY 3D printer kits were released in 2009 and has helped set up multiple workshops and startups with 3D printer farms for prototyping and small-scale production.

Eligibility Requirements

Preference will be given to applicants who are:

  • Currently working at a startup or scale-up, especially those in a technical product development role.

  • Have used 3D printers before and are looking to purchase one or multiple machines.

  • Have an understanding of how to use 3D modeling software

  • Sydney-based (there is no online version of this course).

COVID Safety

  • Spaces will be limited for this course.

  • Social distancing and hygiene procedures will be observed throughout without exception.

This workshop is part of Cicada's Rapid Prototyping Initiative, a series of technical courses based on MIT Fab Lab principles, covering a wide range of topics including firmware development, IoT software development, mechanical design, and electronics. Each of the modules are taught by experts with experience working in highly technical, product development roles.
