About Event

Hi, I'm hosting "Third Person Writing Is Literally A Miracle," an experimental therapy-infused creative writing workshop hosted at Verci.

The point of this class is to use the technique of third-person writing to gain a new perspective on yourself.

It's $20.

*

OVERVIEW:

  1. Create a portrait of yourself as a protagonist from a third-person perspective

  2. Write the current "chapter" of your life that you're in from a first-person perspective

  3. Write that same chapter from the perspective of 3 other people in your life

  4. Share some of what you've written and discuss

*

INSPIRATIONS:

The content and structure of the class is a fusion of 3 things:

  1. My experiences teaching a class called "Autobiography and Memoir Writing" for 3 years at George Brown College in Toronto

  2. Therapeutic techniques from books like "Step Out Of Your Story" by Kim Schneiderman (which I lean on fairly heavily) and "Self-Therapy" by Jay Earley (an Internal Family Systems book whose content is more in the background)

  3. My own experiences writing and publishing both autobiographical nonfiction and less-autobiographical fiction

The ways I witnessed people writing about themselves in the memoir classes I taught, plus my own experiences writing about myself (and characters like me), inspired me to create a class that more directly addresses what it seemed like a lot of my old students actually wanted out of the classes they took with me. This is that class.

ABOUT ME:

Everything you could ever want to know about me is linked from my website, but in short: I'm the author of one book of fiction, The Jokes, an award-winning web series Miss Misery about experimenting with polyamory, a widely-shared essay about lonely men, at least one good short story, some thoughts on art, and a Substack. I've taught at George Brown College and the University of Alabama.

TO SIGN UP:

As mentioned, the cost is $20. Because I'm waiting for my Stripe account to connect with Luma, for this event payment will work like this:

  1. Apply for a spot

  2. Venmo me $20 at skwt1

  3. I'll accept your application
