SPS is pleased to announce we are continuing our semi-monthly wine and cheese events with Dr. Helena Vissing and her integrative model of trauma treatment for expecting and new
mothers
The series is designed, first and foremost, to provide our community with opportunities for members to network, unwind and be thoughtful together. With ample time for members to meet up, socialize, share, and support each other, it includes a talk by a community member where we can explore psychodynamically informed ideas with time for discussion. This is a great way for us to build our sense of community, share our collective wisdom and grow together.
Description:
Helena Vissing, PsyD will present her integrative model of trauma treatment for expecting and new mothers. While founded on a feminist relational psychoanalytic approach, the model draws on matricentric feminism and somatic psychology to deepen the understanding of both theoretical and clinical challenges of working with clients who have and are maternal bodies.
The presentation will include an overview of the treatment model with emphasis on the meeting point of maternally themed psychoanalytic literature and feminist critical developments of it. Integrating psychoanalytic, matricentric feminist, and somatic thinking illuminates how the maternal body is both the site of intersubjective discovery and a contested paradoxical space within modern society: a space holder for the subjectivity of the modern individual. How do we work with clients as autonomous subjects in the modern era when they are going through a life transition that disrupts the very concept of subjectivity?
The presentation will explore how we can clinically navigate this dilemma of the modern separated individual vs. the embodied co-regulatory foundation of intersubjectivity that maternal subjectivity brings forth like nothing else.
Helena Vissing is in private practice in North California. She is the author of Somatic Maternal Healing: Psychodynamic and Somatic Trauma Treatment for Perinatal Mental Health (Routledge, 2023). In this book, she presents her framework that integrates relational psychoanalysis, matricentric feminism, and somatic psychology. She is a Licensed Psychologist and a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner.
