Freedom Concert – Celebrating 35 Years of the Velvet Revolution
Join us in honoring the legacy of the Velvet Revolution as we gather for a special Freedom Concert in NYC, celebrating the resilience, unity, and enduring spirit of freedom that transformed Czechoslovakia 35 years ago on November 17, 1989. To celebrate the legacy of the Velvet Revolution we are hosting a concert featuring a performance by an acclaimed Slovak organist Stanislav Šurin, whose mastery of the organ has echoed across continents, honoring moments of historical and spiritual significance.
About the Artist: Stanislav Šurin
Stanislav Šurin is a celebrated organist, composer, and music educator, widely recognized for his artistry and dedication to sacred music. Šurin’s journey began at the State Conservatory in Bratislava and continued with studies at the Diocesan Conservatory in Vienna and the Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava. Mentored by Ivan Sokol and Johann Trummer, he has since performed around the world, including the inauguration of Slovak presidents and the papal visit of Pope John Paul II.
Šurin’s solo performances with the Slovak Philharmonic and Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra have captivated audiences. Notably, he played at the premiere of Janáček's Glagolitic Mass with Taiwan’s National Symphony Orchestra and has graced stages from Europe to Japan, North America, Russia, and beyond. His passion for the organ has also led him to record several acclaimed solo albums and to restore historic organs across Slovakia, where he founded and directs organ festivals in Trnava, Piešťany, Skalica, and Bratislava.
As we gather to celebrate our freedom, Šurin’s music will serve as a profound tribute to the Velvet Revolution’s ideals, echoing both the past and future hopes for Slovakia.
