When we think about the future of energy, there are seemingly opportunities to add intelligence and increase efficiency across the entire supply chain from energy generation to transmission and storage.
There is also a growing need to increase the resilience of energy infrastructure to ensure the power supply to critical infrastructure. The grid itself needs to be expanded and upgraded to enable continuing electrification in multiple industries.
At the heart of this are transformers that control the flow of energy across the grid. Many people talk about smart transformers but what are they, how do they work, and what are the electrical and mechanical engineering challenges to be overcome in order to realise them?
