The Evolution of Belonging: Finding Connection in a Disconnected Age [Part 1]
With social circles shrinking and loneliness rising, what new models of community can help us foster real connection?
From book clubs to coworking spaces, Discord servers to members-only social clubs, the way we build and experience community is changing faster than ever. The decline of traditional gathering spaces—churches, unions, neighborhood groups—has left many feeling disconnected, while a new wave of "community as a business" is booming, offering curated belonging for a price.
In this interactive discussion, we’ll explore:
🔹 The evolution of community—how we got here, and why it matters.
🔹 The business of belonging—why venture capital is pouring billions into social clubs and community platforms.
🔹 What makes a thriving community today—what structures, rituals, and dynamics create lasting connection?
🔹 What comes next—a fun choose-your-own-adventure brainstorm on how to design communities that bridge political divides, activate public spaces, foster play and joy, or design digital spaces that lead to real-world connection.
Through storytelling, discussion, and hands-on breakout sessions, we’ll rethink how we build community and create belonging in an age of disconnection. You'll walk away with fresh insights, inspiration, and ideas for strengthening your own communities.
💡 This discussion will set the stage for next week's session, where Friendship Coach and Connection Feast founder Alexandra Friedman will lead us in practicing the practical friendship skills needed to create connection and build community in our everyday lives.
