Artist Bio

Cara Romano (b. 1980, Schenectady, New York) has been an artist her entire life. It began very early on with the scissor people (tracings of scissors cut out and made into people), developing into realistic objective and figurative drawing during her elementary and high school years, which were spent growing up in Oberlin, Ohio. In college at the University of Chicago (BA 2002), she began exploring the world of sculpture mainly through found object, assemblage, and installation art. In graduate school at Ohio University (MFA, MA 2007), these art forms led her back into drawing and painting, both on and off the canvas, when she started using an analog, time-based process of drawing and painting directly from sunlight and the shadows it casts. She has explored this process through performance and installation, but has landed for the most part back upon the picture plane, where she creates colorful, abstract two-dimensional compositions in watercolor and ink, sometimes populated with detailed ink drawings and collage elements, all visually woven together through the framework created by the layered light and shadow patterns.  She has been using this process for the past 20 years.

Cara views her art as a spiritual investigation, a cosmic quest, but the destination is very much in the moment – whenever the sunlight appears and inspires her. Oil painting is another medium in which she explores the subject, building up tension between the positive and negative areas of the light and shadow patterns. Her collage work often incorporates nods to artists of the past, as she also has a background in Art History. Cara creates jewelry as another form of art, and is an aspiring musician, writer, and entrepreneur. She teaches drawing and painting at several universities and art centers in Northeast Ohio, and works as the director of Gallery East at Cuyahoga Community College. She resides in Cleveland, has a studio and gallery at Negative Space Gallery, and is a founding member of Chrysalis Artist Studios. Things that she treasures are her connections with family, friends, students, animals, music, nature, and all the beautiful cultures present on Planet Earth.
