Supporting Healing by Unveiling the Slavery, Genocide, and Abuses at the Foundation of the (In)voluntary Sector

Philanthropy and the nonprofits they fund did not float above the histories of our nation. Many of the foundations that dictate much of the sector’s spending would not exist today but for the enslavement of Black Americans; the genocide of >90% of Native Americans, the theft of >99% of Tribal land; and the physical and financial abuse of millions of women. The link between these atrocities and the nonprofit sector are apparent, and yet extraordinarily poorly documented. The poor documentation of this link makes it practically impossible to meaningfully repair our nation because reparations efforts must be understood as efforts to repay victims for harms done, not charitable efforts that take pity on marginalized peoples.

We invite you to join the Link Collective, a group of scholars and nonprofit leaders who meet no more than once a year online or in-person to fill in the gaps in the literature documenting the connection between the third sector and the neonatal birth trauma of its origins. While this is a society-wide project with no one central locus, we hope to build strategy for collecting data that can be utilized by scholars, elected officials, foundations, and nonprofits to better understand this crucial link as they prepare reparations efforts. At our retreat, we will consider the following…

·       How have the wealth, labor, and social capital of marginalized groups been channeled into the third sector?

·       Which stories should be highlighted and prioritized to better support the efforts of people attempting to develop reparations policies?

·       What data can be strategically leveraged toward the effort of documenting the link?

·       How can groups that were divided and marginalized during the birth of the third sector reunite in power with one another and our allies?

·       What is an effective strategy for documenting the link and diffusing it to philanthropic leaders seeking to engage in meaningful reparations?

We intend to present the takeaways of this session in a panel on nonprofit social justice at ARNOVA 2023 in Orlando.

NOTE: This retreat will also be on the UNO Campus in CPACS Room 208 for those who are in the Omaha area on August 24th.
