Maann X Wenjüe Lu
NYSE - the New York Soul Exchange
Some sounds, some tea, some books brought and let go, and some souls exchanged.
A two-day programming co-conceived by Studio Wenjüe Lu and Maann on Friday, May 23rd, and Saturday, May 24th.
On Friday night (5/23 8-10PM), the event unveils with an improvised live performance by Many Ohms – an experimental 4-piece ensemble blending traditional and electronic instruments into spiritually-driven ambient music with genre-bending segments across IDM, techno, folk, classical, and more.
On Saturday (5/24 11AM-1PM), we gather for a book exchange workshop accompanied by a matcha tasting experience guided by a trained tea and matcha maker. Participants are invited to bring one or more printed materials(books, zines, or letters) of personal significance to exchange and immerse in a ritual of conversation, reflection, and tea, while the pieces brought become new fragments in someone else’s soul puzzle. The event will orbit the theme of “soul” and can be as personal or universal as each guest chooses, framing the act of exchange not as a transactional act but as a shared memory and a collaboration.
About Studio Wenjüe Lu:
Wenjüe launched her eponymous studio Wenjüe Lu with partner Chufeng Fang in 2020 after graduating from Parsons and NYU respectively. The duo has since promoted a Taoist approach to clothing: the wearer and garment share a symbiotic bond, where each offers emotive color to the other. By fusing traditional craftsmanship with contemporary art, Wenjüe Lu offers pieces that feel and look intimate. Wenjüe's outerwear, tops, bottoms, and accessories use naturally-colored fibers, embellished with playful cutouts and sculptural details. So concertedly artistic, Wenjüe's work is the pinnacle of thoughtful design.
About Maann:
Maann is a curatorial project and community platform dedicated to spotlighting emerging Asian fashion designers and artists. Rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and a nature-inspired lifestyle, it moves at the rhythm of slow fashion and thoughtful living, honoring the stories stitched into every fabric and form. Maann’s first pop-up space is open from May 2 to May 31 at 332 E 4th Street, New York. Besides showcasing its multi-brand curation, the space transforms through weekly events and workshops celebrating Asian culture and fostering moments of IRL community connection.
