Honoring the Multiplicity of Identity & Leadership Through Collage Art

This workshop centers collage art as a medium to explore the layered emotions and evolving stories that make us who we are as leaders. Through reflective prompts and symbolic material play, participants will honor their personal journeys—celebrating love, processing grief (for others or parts of self), and reimagining their leadership identity beyond societal expectations.

Especially during the month of May, we want to honor and celebrate the many diverse expressions of motherhood—recognizing that it isn't always defined by biology. Motherhood exists in many forms—birthing, nurturing, grieving, remembering, or reclaiming—and is also an expression of leadership that is often overlooked. We encourage anyone who identifies as a mother to explore and celebrate that identity in this learning lab, but this offering is for all regardless of how you identify.

Through guided discussion and art-making, attendees will create a personal collage that acts as a tactile manifesto—honoring legacies, acknowledging absences, or reclaiming agency in their narrative. No art experience is needed; this is a space for curiosity and healing. By the end, participants will leave with a tangible artifact of their journey, renewed connections to their stories, and affirmation that motherhood, in all its forms, is worthy of witness.

NOTE: This interactive learning lab invites you to actively participate, so come prepared to roll up your sleeves and create art during the session!

How To Prepare to Participate:

Consider how you want to create your collage: Do you want to make a digital or physical collage?

To collage physically, prepare for our session by gathering these tools:

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Your “canvas” (it can be a sheet of paper, but thicker is better if you have it!)

  • Materials to cut & paste

You can find and reuse a wide variety of papers and materials to cut & paste into your collage. We strongly encourage you to take a look around your house and community to see what you can repurpose, especially from materials that might otherwise just be thrown away!

Here are just a few ideas of where to source your materials:

  • Pictures of yourself (especially at various stages of leadership) or loved ones,

  • Magazines, catalogs, old calendars, advertisements or junk mail

  • Receipts, notebook pages, or stickers

  • Newspapers or obituaries

  • Seeds or pressed flowers

  • Gift cards, gift bags, or tissue paper

  • Old jewelry or trinkets

To collage digitally, consider using these tools:

  • Canva

    • This is a fantastic tool. You can sign up for a free version that includes many free images, and upload any others that you want.  But if you’ve never used it before, we recommend you try it first to see if it is the right tool for you.

  • Powerpoint or Google Slides

    • These free tools don't come with images included, but you can insert nearly any image from the internet into them.

Note that (except with a premium version of Canva), you will not be able to “cut out” images in any of these tools like you would with a pair of scissors. But they can still be a really fun, no-mess way to make art!
