About Event

In this talk, Singaporean photographer Melisa Teo will take you on her artistic journey through a series of images, starting with her early works. She will share her very first photographic series and discuss her initial publications, Light From Within and The Light Beyond, which document her spiritual explorations of sacred realms.

More recently, her focus shifted to nature, culminating in The Trees of Paris, a deeply personal tribute to the silent witnesses of urban life, and Two Rivers, her latest work dedicated to the Singapore River that flows through her birthplace, and the Seine River in Paris, her adoptive city.

As she shares these projects, Melisa will discuss her growth as an artist and explain how her evolving understanding of photography offers new perspectives on the world around her—perspectives brought to life through her camera.

This talk is part of the National Library’s Art X Stacks programme series, which fosters deeper connections with Singapore’s places, communities, and natural environment through the arts. From 4 June to 4 July, an Art X Stacks book display—jointly curated by Melisa Teo and the National Library—will be showcased at Level 8 of the National Library Building.

About the Speaker

Melisa Teo is a Singaporean photographer who regards her camera as a “third eye” which is guided by intuition to perceive a reality that eludes the naked eye. For her, the camera is a transmitter and translator of light’s messages and photography, a doorway bordering visible and invisible worlds. Since 2008, she has explored spiritual realms in search of the sacred, and this has been documented in books like Light From Within and The Light Beyond, as well as exhibitions such as Dark Light and Eden. In recent years, her fascination with the relationship between man and nature is highlighted in The Trees of Paris (2020). Her latest book Two Rivers (2025), features images of the Singapore and Seine Rivers and explores her connection to both her birthplace and her adoptive city. Melisa majored in English Language and Literature at the National University of Singapore and French Language and Literature at Sorbonne University in Paris.
