About Event

Gusto is excited to host community events at our Denver, SF, and NYC offices, showcasing inspiring women and folks in tech. At each event, we'll hear from a panel of presenters who will give a lightning talk about a technical project or topic they are passionate about, followed by a Q&A session. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network.

This event is open to everyone.

On June 4th, join us at Gusto's NYC office or remotely.

Speakers

Hannah Barudin - Strong and Wrong

Most of us are taught to fear being wrong. But what if being confidently incorrect is actually a critical skill for engineers and innovators? This talk will (hopefully) explore how the ability to commit to an idea—even if it might not stand up to initial scrutiny—can be a powerful driver of learning and progress. We'll examine why the most successful professionals aren't those who are always right, but those who are willing to put forward ideas, learn quickly, and iterate boldly.

Novella Chiechi - Where did my (keyboard) focus go?

Ever struggled to know where you were in an online form? Hit the escape key and couldn’t get rid of an advertising banner? If so, you’re asking a common, frustrating question: Where did my keyboard focus go? This lightning talk will introduce the age-old challenge: Why and when to explicitly handle keyboard focus, when not to, and who benefits. This talk will be appropriate for newer frontend devs (or those new to accessibility), as well as other folks who want a better idea of one of the foundational tools that help make using the web fast, accurate, and predictable.

Nora Linden - Mindful Coding

Taking the stress and imposter syndrome out of your work by practicing mindfulness through your code. This talk will handle commit messages, debugging, and creating a cozy space to work in.

Ly Na Nguyen - Introducing your newest mobile companion: spyware 2.0

Did you know, you don't have to click on links or install things for spyware to have access to your entire digital life? Yep! Pegasus spyware has been exploiting zero-click vulnerabilities left and right, specifically targeting journalists, activists, or political dissident. Here's how to detect Pegasus and protect yourself against its intrusiveness.

Antoinette Stevens - Credential stuffing attacks: detection and response

Antoinette is a Staff security engineer at Ramp with 10 years of security experience across detection engineering and incident response. Her talk will focus on an overview of what credential stuffing attacks are and how they can be detected and what should happen in response. Will also walk through how we’ve approached this at Ramp.
