MEET THE ARTIST: Autonomous agents - Kevin Abosch, Malpractice, Simon Denny, Patrick Tresset and Sougwen Chung
This session explores the expanding agency of machines and avatars in art and identity through two groundbreaking exhibitions at Digital Art Mile.
We will start with Bright Moments: AUTOMATA, which traces the evolution of autonomous art over two millennia, from early mechanical devices to blockchain organisms and AI systems. The exhibition features pioneering works by Desmond Paul Henry, George Legrady, and Patrick Tresset, alongside contemporary creators like Primavera De Filippi (Plantoid), Simon Denny, robotlab, Gene Kogan, Joel Simon, and the AI artist Will Higgs. Through robotic installations, generative interfaces, and self-replicating systems, AUTOMATA challenges traditional ideas of authorship and creative agency.
We’ll then continue to Second Guess: We Emotional Cyborgs, curated by Anika Meier, with artists Kevin Abosch and Malpractice present. This exhibition explores avatars and AI agents as mirrors, disruptors, and extensions of identity. From cyberfeminist pioneers to Flynn, the first AI art student, the show reflects on how virtual personas shape our sense of self in an era defined by simulation and synthetic connection.
We will finish with a visit to the Sigg Art Foundation, which features - among many other artists - Sougwen Chung, known for her groundbreaking work with robotic systems. Blending performance, drawing, and AI, Chung collaborates with custom-built robotic arms that respond to her gestures in real time, exploring the evolving relationship between humans and machines through co-creation.
Together, these exhibitions offer a provocative lens on autonomy, creativity, and the shifting boundaries of what it means to be human.
