How to Talk About Doing Good (Without Putting People Off)
How to Talk About Doing Good (Without Putting People Off)
If you care about making a positive impact - through donations, climate action, ethical lifestyle choices, etc - you’ve probably wrestled with how to talk about it. As philosopher Peter Singer has argued, normalising conversations about doing good can inspire others to reflect and act too.
But we've all experienced the awkwardness that can arise:
The climate-conscious person trying not to lecture colleagues who drive an SUV
The vegetarian who's friends are always apologetic for eating meat
The effective altruist unsure how to share their giving philosophy without seeming self-righteous
In short: how do we discuss doing good with others - without sounding preachy?
🌿 Bring a drink or snack and join us in Michiel’s garden on (nearly) the longest day of the year to talk about doing good in a way that invites, rather than alienates! This garden gathering offers space to:
Share your experiences navigating these conversations
Learn from others' successes and missteps
Develop practical approaches for discussing values authentically
Effective altruism is a global movement that asks a simple question: How can we use our time, money, and resources to help others as much as possible? Rather than just doing what feels good, effective altruists aim to do what does the most good using reason, evidence, and compassion.
We are Effective Altruism Belgium, a nonprofit building a community of people dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing problems.
