Program
4:00 PM | Art is Science in Love* | Martin Krzywinksi
Emotions are a part of science — the act of thinking makes us feel. The sadness of a muddy explanation — the elation of a concept understood. I'll draw from examples of my journal cover designs, science posters and information graphics to explore how emotional and artistic expression stimulates scientific understanding and conversation.

5:00 PM | Connecting the Dots | Katherine Gillieson
Through a discussion of recent projects, I will touch on a range of themes relevant in today's information landscape, including interdisciplinarity, accessibility, low-bandwidth design, and publication. My aim is to highlight the expansive possibilities of information design as a mode of thinking, and to open up questions for the future of practice and education in information design and visualization.
6:00 PM | Where were we?
Discussion panel with Martin and Katherine, moderated by Ernesto Peña.
Martin Krzywinski
Martin is a Staff Scientist at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Center at BC Cancer.
He presents clearly, connects broadly, sparks imagination and encourages enthusiasm for inquiry and explanation. He creates visuals with analytical clarity and artistic dimensions, which have appeared in New York Times, Science, Nature, Wired and Scientific American.
He has made maps of nothing, found poems in spam and insists that there is life after pie charts. He is also the former owner of the world’s most popular rat.
