​Sci-Hub was founded by Alexandra Elbakyan in response to the high cost of research papers behind paywalls. As of July 2020, Sci-Hub self-reported that the cumulative number of downloads exceeded one billion, and the average number of downloads per day is 300-600 thousand.

​Alexandra is globally respected amongst coders, Phds, Professors, students, activists, and educators. She has been described as a "Science's Pirate Queen". Nature has listed her in the 'Top ten people that mattered in science'.
