Leading Significantly: Going Beyond Servant Leadership
Leading Significantly: Going Beyond Servant Leadership
I used to think "servant leadership" was the highest form of leadership. I leaned into this idea and believed I was doing the right thing—I stayed later than everyone, took requirements off my subordinates' plates and onto mine, and removed all access boundaries. I was the quintessential servant—until I flamed out and became useless to everyone. Martyrdom is not a sustainable leadership model, but this is exactly where servant leadership leads.
I'm not alone. Studies show that over 50% of managers report feeling burned out, often due to the self-neglect inherent in poorly applied servant leadership. Leaders who are burning out get less done, make unforced errors, and don't innovate.
Burnout, lack of boundaries, employees delegating their work to you, overwhelm, and the feeling that your over-burdened rucksack is weighing you down are the dark sides of servant leadership.
Your health, family, and friends pay the costs, and important facets of your life suffer neglect. Rather than inspired, your employees feel they don't ever want to be you. That's not leadership.
There's a better way, which I'll discuss in this masterclass.
Here are some of the outcomes you'll gain:
Stop burnout by applying the oxygen mask rule so you care for yourself as you are caring for others.
How to win with your natural strengths and helping others win with theirs, so you reduce the mental tax of drudgery.
A simple, repeatable process to focus on your priorities and take appropriate things off your plate (President Eisenhower used this system brilliantly).
How to set and maintain boundaries without awkwardness.
Ways to delegate effectively so you set up your subordinates for success, and eliminate people putting their tasks on your plate.
Three steps to manage event-to-event transitions so you show up as the leader, spouse, and parent you want to be.
How to create a support network that encourages you to new heights.
